Drone Engines Testing (UAV): precision and reliability with Custom Test Benches

Borghi & Saveri dynamometers are also used in the development and testing of engines for the aeronautical sector, particularly for remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS), commonly known as drones.

For this application, we developed a tailor-made test bench designed to ensure reliability, measurement accuracy, and full operational autonomy. Data control and repeatability are key elements in drone engine testing.

Supply: Custom and Complete Test Bench

The supplied system includes:

Capacity Curve Diagram Eddy Current Dynamometer FA 2030 SL
  • Eddy current dynamometer: FA 20/30 SL
    Nameplate data:
    • maximum power: 14.7 kW
    • maximum torque: 35 Nm
    • maximum speed: 15’000 rpm
  • BCU Control System Brake Control Unit
Digital control unit for dynamometer management with torque, speed and power measurement.
The BCU features an advanced and intuitive interface accessible directly from a web browser and can either autonomously control the test or be managed by the test cell automation system.
  • Electropneumatic starter device with remote control
  • Mechanical base frame and engine support, custom-designed to ensure structural rigidity and proper alignment, while allowing different engine types and configurations to be installed.
  • Complete driveline with elastic coupling, for the connection between the engine and the dynamometer.

From Design to Delivery: The Added Value of Borghi & Saveri

The distinctive value of the hardware supply was ensured by Borghi & Saveri, which supported the customer through all the key phases of the project:

  1. Driveline design and engineering
Based on the engine model specified by the customer, Borghi & Saveri designed and supplied the entire transmission system between the engine and the dynamometer, ensuring correct mechanical coupling and operational reliability.
  2. Full system pre-testing
Before delivery, the complete engine test bench was subjected to preliminary testing at the Borghi & Saveri workshops, simulating the operating conditions required by the customer.
This phase made it possible to validate the correct functioning of the entire system and minimize commissioning time at the final installation site.
  3. “Ready-to-test” delivery
The custom test bench was supplied as a complete turnkey package, including detailed manuals, allowing the customer to start operating the system independently without the need for additional interventions.

A Custom Approach for Specialized Applications

This project confirms Borghi & Saveri’s ability to develop custom test benches also for non-conventional applications, such as the aeronautical and drone sectors, combining:

  • dedicated mechanical design
  • complete system integration
  • pre-delivery testing and validation activities
  • high flexibility and strong customer-oriented approach.

An approach focused on measurement reliability, design flexibility and customer support from the earliest development stages.
